When it comes to searching the health science literature, online
library searches and databases like PubMed <www.pubmed.com> and
OVID <www.ovid.com> have become invaluable. However, they
are huge databases that are sometimes overkill for a small literature
search. Add to that fact that with a subject like voice and speech
(which encompasses acoustics, biomechanics, otolaryngology, voice
performance, etc.), one may have to search several different databases
to find the articles in need. Even then, these databases may not
yet have some of the early classic articles. For these reasons,
the researchers at the NCVS have began to pool into a single database
the references they use most in supporting their own work. These
include most of the publications referred to in articles by the
NCVS researchers, as well as related articles. Because of the nature
of scientific research, this database will continue to evolve as
does the field. The current database has more than 6700 references,
with nearly 8000 different authors.
There are many software reference and citation packages available.
We chose Reference Manager for the simple reason that more of our
researchers were using it at the time we decided to create a database.
Reference Manager is described by itself as “the complete
reference solution”. We find it quite handy ourselves. If
you are at an academic institution, don’t forget to ask for
academic pricing. If there is a reference you think should be in the database, or
you have more information that would add to a reference, please
send the information to:
NCVSWebmaster@ncvs.org
We will continue to update and clean up this database, so check
back often.
