Abstract

A proposal is presented for formal academic training in vocology, the science of vocal ha bil i ta tion and voice disorders. Rationale is given for expanding current methods of intervention offered in speech-language pathology to include more of the techniques offered in theatre arts and music. Formally, this can be accomplished by establishing a specialty track (vocology) in an M.A. program. The primary focus of vocal habilitation should be to meet the vocational and recreational needs of an individual, not simply a normal voice.
