Professional Experience

Research Assistant III Aug 1-current; Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, University of Iowa. PI : Ingo Titze. Project : Research toward occupational safety in vocalization. This research addresses an important public need, the protection of an estimated 10 million workers in the U.S. who rely heavily on their voice as a primary tool of trade. Evidence has been growing that occupational voice users, such as teachers, telephone workers, ministers, counselors, interviewers, are at risk for vocal injury because they get inadequate recovery times from prolonged speaking. The underlying hypothesis is that there is a limited vibration dose that vocal fold tissues can withstand. Skills: confucal microscopy; H & E staining; cell culture

Postdoctoral Associate March 2006-Jul 31; Dows research institute, University of Iowa. PI : Kim A Brogden. Project : Defensin-induced adaptive immunity to HagB. The severity of periodontal disease is dependent on a combination of host, microbial agent, and environmental factors. One strong correlate related to periodontal disease pathogenesis is the immune status of the host. Our approach to improve the immune status is to use human neutrophil peptide defensins or human beta-defensins, elements of innate host defense, to initiate and regulate the adaptive immune response to foreign antigens. Skills: mice handling; Luminex; Radial diffusion; bone marrow culture; cell culture; ELISA; HPLC; MALDI.

Postdoctoral Associate Jan 2002-Feb 2006; Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Iowa. PI : Masataka Kawai. Project : To document the molecular mechanisms of contraction in cardiac muscle fibers, in particular to characterize the elementary molecular steps of the cross-bridge cycle in myocardium. Three papers are published in the Journal of Physiology . One paper is published in the Biophysical Journal . One manuscript has been submitted to Journal of Physiology. Skills: Rabbit handling; Purification of protein; Alkali-Urea gel; SDS-PAGE; Muscle dissection; Thin filament reconstitution; Sinusoidal analysis; Photoshop; Excel. Others: Computer skills including the use of software for statistics; Analysis of data and preparation of data and graphs using Excel, NIH Image, Adobe Photo, and Power Point for presentations and papers on PC; Training of research assistants with basic molecular biology experiments and trouble shooting; Maintenance of lab instruments.

Research fellow Jul 1999-Jun 2002; the Institute of Military Medical Science , Kunming , P. R. China. Research on food hygiene and drinking water hygiene and the effective methods to improve the hygiene on food and drinking water.

Physician Jul 1995-Sep 1996; the Affiliated Hospital of Yijinhuoluo Prison, Yijinhuoluo, Inner Mongolia Municipality , P. R. China. General Clinic diseases in the Department of Internal Medicine.
